In cabinetry, the term veneer appears often. In fact, it’s mentioned no less than 75 times on our website. This affordable, versatile material is popular in cabinet construction, though. In this post, we’ll dive into what veneers are, how they’re made as well as their benefits and applications.

What is a veneer?

In simple terms, veneers are a thin layer of wood that’s applied to the surface of a core material. It’s typically made by slicing or peeling the surface layer of natural wood. This thin wood layer is then bonded to a less expensive core material, creating the appearance of solid wood at a lower cost. It allows you to enjoy the look of high-end wood finishes without the price tag or weight of solid wood.

How is it made?

The process involves several steps to ensure a quality finish:

First, logs are carefully chosen for their grain, color, and quality. Then, the wood is either sliced into thin sheets or peeled to achieve the desired thickness. After that, the thin wood layers are dried, and then pressed onto the core material with adhesives, creating a durable bond. Lastly, the finished product is sanded, stain, and sealed just like solid wood.

Here’s an excellent video touring a wood veneer factory:

Types of veneers

There are various types available, each offering different aesthetics and applications. Here are the 3 main types:

We have natural veneer, made from real wood. This veneer is unique in grain and color, depending on the wood species. The most common type is oak veneer, due to its durability, availability, and versatile grain pattern.

There’s also reconstituted veneer, which is still made from wood. It’s created by layering dyed wood to achieve a consistent pattern. This is popular in modern designs.

The last type is backed veneer. This is made with a paper or fabric backing to add stability. This is often used in larger applications where extra strength is needed.

Benefits

Veneers offer several advantages, making them a popular choice for both residential and commercial projects. Not only is this material cost-effective, it’s also eco-friendly and durable.

Veneers provide the look of solid wood at the fraction of the cost. This makes it possible for people on a budget to purchase beautiful cabinets without the steep price.

Since veneers use thin layers of wood, they help conserve natural resources by making a single log do more. When bonded to a stable core material, they can be durable and resist warping better than solid wood.

Common Applications

Veneers are popular in cabinetry and furniture as well as interior doors, wall panels, and decorative accents. It adds a touch of natural elegance without the extra weight or cost.

In cabinetry, the most common application is in the door, end panels, and shelving. The core material is commonly A-grade plywood, unless we’re talking about the door. A cabinet door can have a solid wood frame, but a veneered center panel. Oftentimes, the core material is either medium density fiberboard or high density fiberboard.

In furniture, the most common application is on accent surfaces and full coverage. In other words, a desk could be made of plywood or fiberboard, but the outer layer is a wood veneer.

Veneer vs. Laminate: What’s the Difference?

These are entirely two different materials. Veneers are made from real wood, whereas laminates are a synthetic, plastic-based material. Laminates are often more durable and scratch-resistant, but they lack the natural look and feel of real wood. Veneers offer a unique texture and warmth that many find more appealing in high-quality furniture and cabinetry.

Is it right for you?

If you’re looking for a material that offers the look and feel of wood without the cost or weight, veneer is a great choice. It’s durable, versatile, and environmentally friendly.

This material provides an affordable, attractive, and sustainable alternative to solid wood. Whether you’re remodeling your kitchen or choosing furniture, understanding this material can help you make a well-informed choice that enhances your space without compromising on style.

Couldn't be happier in working with Waverly. They answered all my questions about construction and features. Once going so far as calling the manufacturer to get the answer. My 30 cabinets were delivered quickly. There was a couple pieces damaged. Quick easy form to fill out to get replacements which arrived within a week. When I was assembling one of the last cabinets, a small part buried within a package of screws was damaged. This was weeks after I took delivery. I wrote a note asking to buy a replacement (as it was outside damage reporting window). 2 days later the part showed up at my doorstep no questions asked.Thank you Amanda!

John and the Team at Waverly Cabinets were an absolute pleasure to work with. John has great attention to detail and worked with us to design our kitchen, pantry, laundry room, and vanities. Prices are great, quality is even better, and the lead times were shorter than I expected. They have also been very helpful with follow on questions as I install. Overall, 10/10 experience here and would gladly use them again for future projects.
