When cabinets are placed in visible areas?such as islands, end runs, or open-concept layouts?the exposed sides often need to be finished so they match the rest of the cabinetry. This process is commonly referred to as finishing or skinning the cabinet side.

Many cabinet styles come standard with a birch cabinet side that is color matched to the selected finish. While this provides a clean and consistent look, the wood grain may differ slightly from the cabinet doors.

For customers who prefer the cabinet side to closely match the door grain, an additional finished panel?often called a skin?can be applied. Some cabinet lines offer these skins pre-cut to size, while others use larger panels that are trimmed to fit during installation.

Using a finished skin or panel creates a seamless, furniture-quality appearance and is especially recommended for high-visibility areas. Your designer can help determine the best option based on the cabinet style and layout of your space.
